learning from Las Vegas

It was the task of this assignment to reconstruct a building in Las Vegas, I chose the Luxor Hotel, which has the form of a pyramid. I collected pictures of the hotel from the internet. The way people capture something says something about how people see a building, and this is what I wanted to show. I cut all the pyramids out of the pictures, which resulted in a loose pyramid and an environment picture. I created posters of each step, one of the loose pyramids, one of the environment and one with the information about the picture (i.e. by whom and when it was taken and where I found it on the internet). In the middle of the poster was a map, and the photos on the posters were placed on the spots from where they were taken. When a photo was placed close to the map it meant that this photo was taken close to the building. In the poster series you can see the proportions of the photos themselves, but also how many photos were taken from where. As a comparison, I repeated this process with the real pyramid in Egypt.

From the pyramids of Las Vegas and Egypt, I made 3D models to visualize the proportions and to capture the reconstruction process of the pyramids physically. I did this by projecting the environment photo on the wall and holding the 3D model of the pyramid in front of the projected photo. The shadow of the 3D-pyramid covered the white space. Of this process I took a photo, from the angle of the original photo. So, of for example the original photo had been taken from the right front, one would see the 3D-pyramid on my photo from the exact same angle.


no crime in the park

I found an internet site ‘www.police.uk’, on which the English police shows us how many crimes have been committed during the last months and where they took place. When I was researching this site, I found out that there tended to be no crimes in parks. The place where one would expect a lot of crimes to occur, turned out to be crime-free! However, when I searched further on the internet, whether parks were indeed crime-free, I found out that this is not the case.

The assignment was to make an internettour. For this tour, I put in scene, that I walk through a park talking about what I found out on the website ‘www.police.uk’. Then I read out a letter, which I ‘sent’ to the police, and after that ‘the response’ of the police. In the end, I analyse the answers of the police and ask the public what their opinion is.

 


Crillee

The assignment was to make a letter specimen of a typeface. I chose ‘Crillee’ as typeface and discovered that there was not that much information available. On top of that, the things I found told contradicting stories. I made different specimens. My own association with the typeface was cars and speed. One of the articles I read described the typeface nicely: ‘power’.

A model kit. The typeface has little hooks, that is why I had the association with model kits. I have used the words Hummer, Porsche and Ferrari and made model kits of them. So, it turned into a game for kids, where they can push the letters out of the model and make car brands.

A photo book with women who stand in front of cars. I chose the names of the women.
For the names of the woman I used the typeface ‘Crillee’.

The zine is about gentrification, in the zine you find one text made by Jan van Duppen and Joost de Waal about gentrification in Berlin. In this text, the Tacheles building is one of the examples and forms the red threat of the zine. The Tacheles building was built in 1907 as a fancy shopping hall. Around 1990, it became an artistic place, and now it is a touristic attraction that is supposedly artistic. The zine contains a variety of quotes, ambiance images, quotes from graffiti and the text from Jan and Joost.


Silvio Berlusconi game

Together with Janna Ullrich I made a game about Silvio Berlusconi. The game is inspired on the television program ‘Wie is de Mol’ (Who is the mole?). In this program, ten people compete , and one of the players is the ‘mol’. They will work together to fulfill several tasks, and thereby earn money for the kitty. Meanwhile, ‘de Mol’ puts all his effort in sabotaging the missions and remain ‘unnoticed’. The goal of the game is to earn as much money as possible and to find out who’s the real ‘Mol’. In our game you’ve got to discover, hunt after the real Berlusconi. Our thrilling, shaky, but always charming game has five different layers, which are presented below.

[Id-cards]
There are eight cards with friends of Berlusconi on it, one card with Berlusconi, and one card with the National Swiss Bank. On the back of the ID-cards you’ll see the characteristics of Berlusconi, because everyone in the game acts as if he’s Berlusconi.

[Board]
The board consists of nine triangles, each triangle is one person. When a person leaves the game, a sale card, which is bought by the group, will replace the triangle. That’s one step further for Berlusconi’s dictatorship!

[Cards]
The sale cards represent all Berlusconi’s possessions, from television companies to woman and from real estate to a football club (Forza Milano). In our game, you’ll have to buy all these sale cards to become a kind of dictator (Yes! This game is a step-by-step guide to become enormously powerful, smart , charming and evil).
The game starts with a sale card. The group has to discuss if they’re going to buy the card or not. The group will have a very very brief moment of reflection on the topic and then has to inform the bank about their opinion (PRO or CONTRA) and their bid (How much money do they bring in?). After the transaction, the balance sheet is drawn up. Who disagreed with the purchase? So, who tried to block Berlusconi’s way to the top? From this group of ‘awful’ disbelievers the person who contributed the least amount of money is abandoned from the game!

[Money]
Money=Women=Power=Money=Women etc. In this game you’ll pay with bills which have beautiful pictures of the sexy hot bitches that Berlusconi has somehow a connection with. Thus, you’ll purchase a sale card with women. On the back of the money you see a volcano, which links to Berlusconi’s artificial volcano located in his garden.

Everybody holds a starting capital of 2 billion Swiss Franc. All charges and balances have to be documented on the public scheme. As soon as a player goes bankrupt he has to leave the game. Berlusconi’s account is, off course, secret and eternal!

[Scheme]
The National Swiss Bank player collects the votes of the others (written on a bank note) and their ID-Cards. He writes this information down in the scheme. Afterwards he returns the bank notes and ID-cards.

To be clear, players’ bank notes do not indicate their balances, they are just tools for payment and voting. The balances of each player are displayed on the scheme.

After, I visited the exposition ‘de best verzorgde boeken’ (The Best Dutch Book Designs) in Amsterdam. I had a few questions about the presentation of the books. I was a little indignant, because I did not understand the design bookshelves and so on. I thought this system did not represent the value of the books, thereby the exposition totally missed its objectives: ‘present a selection of well-designed books’. At home, I sat down behind my laptop and wrote an e-mail with a couple of questions to the designers of the exposition, in order to better understand the exposition design and to share my opinion with them.

Besides these remarks on the designers, the exposition made me think of: ‘How do people show their books at home? Where and how do they save them? And, what does this all mean?’ Without a doubt, a prominent placed book-shelve in a living room tells a lot about people, it creates a certain atmosphere. Moreover, what’s in the shelve? Which books do they read? Or you better ask yourself, which book do they want you to believe they read? Do they want to show their literary know-how, their wide interests, their political motives, or their strong commitment towards anything? Or all at the same time? These questions led to a research I conducted. Part of it is a photo serial of the book shelves of the inhabitants of a street in Tilburg.

From this whole process I made a book, which contains the email conversation, the photo serial and my own thoughts on the subject.
